WHAT IS IT?
It’s not often that you find cotton yarn so thick as it tends to be very dense and heavy, but Whopper Cotton has been created by blending in 50% acrylic which makes a huge difference and lightens up the yarn.
Super chunky yarns work up really quickly but normally have more of a woolly appearance. Whopper has been created with homewares, crochet and stitch definition in mind, so a very smooth yarn that will create crisp lines whilst being nice and soft. Also perfect for people with wool allergies but who want that chunky look and being machine washable it’s really practical too.
WHAT'S IT FOR?
The bright vibrant colours lend themselves to fun, colourful projects and are ideal for knitting or crochet. Make into both garments and accessories for yourself and the home either using larger tools for a draping effect or smaller tools to create a more rigid shape – think crocheted bowls and bags. Excellent for blankets and throws, granny square cushions and floor cushions.
The nice drape of the cut end is also excellent for really colourful chunky tassels and the smooth appearance adds good stitch definition within braiding, lacemaking, macramé and knotting. All on a large scale of course, but great for speedy projects or to get beginners or kids involved and see the results of their work quickly – perfect instant gratification!
We have a free downloadable pattern available for an easy crocheted neck warmer using contrasting colours. It hooks up in an afternoon and is great for anyone fairly new to crochet as it’s so quick and easy. Made from just three balls, that’s just over a tenner for a lovely, cosy cowl. It’s a chunkier version of attic24’s neck warmer and Lucy’s online tutorial is very detailed if you need more help than my pattern (just remember that you are using a thicker yarn and hook).
Knit or crochet to super chunky patterns, though super chunky is a slightly vague thickness, so check tensions first and don’t knit or hook it too tightly or it will be stiff and solid (unless that’s what you require).
