WHAT IS IT?

This is a beautiful lustre pure English wool in a DK weight which is probably Wensleydale due to its long staple, gleaming surface and good strength. We can’t be certain of the breed or whether it is a blend, but it is certainly pure wool which is perfect to dye. *Some parts of some skeins are marked with dusty grey patches which should wash out or easily be dyed over. We think they are a result of a split bag rubbing against a grubby cardboard box, rather than staining or being sun bleached.*

WHAT'S IT FOR?

All our undyed yarns can be dyed with hot or cold water dyes using tools and equipment you would have in your kitchen. Wool needs to be dyed with hot water or acid dyes and can also be dyed with natural dyes – into solid or unique space-dyed colourways.

Lustre wool has the appearance of almost a roving style yarn because there are no obvious separate strands, just a slight twist. This is due to the fact that it’s so strong is doesn’t need plying up, so can be used as it is. It is a heavy yarn in that it is quite dense, rather than light and fluffy so is probably most suited to small garments and accessories so you don’t get weighed down.

Ideal to weave in either the warp or the weft on all types of looms into strong garments and accessories. Would make excellent throws, cushions and blankets. Due to the smooth, slightly hairy and therefore natural, rustic it is probably also ideal for re-enactment purposes being made into braids and plaits, bands and belts.

Although untried, there is no reason why it won’t felt, though it might not be quite as effective at matting together as merino for example, due to the glossy surface which has a mohair or alpaca sheen and felts less easily.

WHY SHOULD I BUY IT?

A strong, versatile yarn that’s perfect to use either in its natural state or once dyed for a huge range of crafts. These large skeins are ready to go straight into the dyebath and are an excellent price.
