WHAT IS IT?

Dreamy is a beautiful, luxurious blend of 50% cashmere and 50% cotton in a lovely 2ply (laceweight) quality. There is one strand of ecru cashmere and two finer strands of bleached cotton twisted together to create a smooth, simple yarn that’s perfect to use as it is or just ready to be dyed. By twisting these two fibres together you are getting the best of both worlds – the cashmere softens up the cotton and the cotton makes the cashmere cooler and much for economical.

WHAT'S IT FOR?

Cashmere is the king of fibres – it’s warm, luxurious and very soft, but as it’s sourced from goats that live in such remote areas of the world it’s also very expensive. All our undyed yarns can be dyed with hot or cold water dyes using tools and equipment you would have in your kitchen.

Dreamy is an interesting blend, as cashmere (being an animal fibre) and cotton (being a vegetable fibre) require different treatments when it comes to dyeing. Essentially you have three options – choose a hot water (acid) dye which will dye the cashmere and just gently colour the cotton; choose a cold water dye (procion) which will dye the cotton and just gently colour the cashmere. Both these options should give you a lovely marled, subtle effect throughout the yarn.

The third option is to choose a multi-purpose dye that will dye both elements equally well. Of course you could space-dye or create a shaded palette with any of the combinations, so lots of potential to create your own bespoke colours.

Laceweight requires patience when knitting or crocheting so is perfect for smaller garments and accessories including shawls, scarves, gloves and mitts. What about a luxurious christening shawl or teeny tiny baby clothes that will be beautifully soft against baby’s skin? But if you have a knitting machine it will be perfect to quickly create soft, beautiful garments and wraps on a much larger scale.

The gentle twist of Dreamy means that it’s not the strongest yarn in the world. It will be most suited to being woven in the weft, though used in the warp with care if you are an experienced weaver.

If you can bear it you could also experiment with felting this yarn once it has been knitted or woven. The blend means that the cotton won’t felt but the cashmere will, so a light, soft felt with a subtle texture feels as though it will be the outcome – why not have a play?
