WHAT IS IT?
Barra is a very strong, smooth yarn spun from 90% Australian wool and 10% nylon with a high twist. The three strands twisted together give a lovely round yarn with a gentle lustre, that works well in a number of crafts. It is made for a company who weave seat cushions for cars, planes and trains meaning it is very hardwearing, durable and colourfast. It comes in a selection of both bright and muted shades that the company combine (sometimes with shades of Islay) for their designs.
WHAT'S IT FOR?
This is a perfect weaving yarn, for using in both the warp or weft of industrial as well as domestic table and floor looms. Use within tablet weaving for intricate designs, tapestry looms for a zing of colour or inkle looms for colourful bands.
Make into colourful braids and tassels, great for knotting into strong cords and ropes. Although this yarn is approx. 4ply in knitting or crochet terms it does have quite a high twist, so could spiralise depending on how fabrics are constructed.
This would give an interesting effect, but means it's not entirely suitable for regular machine or hand knitting of garments. If you'd like to experiment it's probably best to buy a cone first, knit a tension square and wash it before embarking on a large project. Excellent for extremely durable vessels, bags, throws and floor cushions where a "fit" or slightly unusual direction to the stitches could be an asset.
