WHAT IS IT?
DY184 is a thick, smooth bleached cotton with a minimum of 80% recycled cotton and 20% mixed fibres. A simple, strong yarn that’s perfect to dye.
WHAT'S IT FOR?
All our undyed yarns can be dyed with hot or cold water dyes using tools and equipment you would have in your kitchen. Cotton needs to be dyed with cold water, procion or fibre reactive dyes and can also be dyed with natural dyes – into solid or unique space-dyed colourways.
The 20% content of this yarn that isn’t cotton is likely to be a polyester blend due to the yarn being made of shredded poly/cotton fabrics. Although the polyester won’t dye it will take on some colour so the overall effect will be a slightly speckled – almost worn denim effect. The bright white base will dye to fresh, light shades easier than a cream yarn would, so a great opportunity to experiment with dyes and paints. Please note that this yarn has been stacked on dusty shelves meaning the outside edges of the original cones are a little grubby leading to a slight patchiness on some of these wound cones. This will not be obvious at all if the yarn is dyed and there is a good chance that any small marks may wash out, but this is not certain.
This smooth, strong yarn can be used for all types of projects and is especially good when knitted or crocheted into mats or bags, vessels or cushions for major impact. It is a strong yarn that can be used in the warp and weft and makes an ideal warp for peg looms. Perfect for large scale braids and tassels, knotting and macramé projects such as wall-hangings, hammocks and sculptural pieces!
