WHAT IS IT?
Wild Silk is a lovely range of 100% pure tussah silk noil yarns for a wide range of textile crafts. This silk is soft handling, though rough looking, character filled yarn with a small amount of lustre that will soften as the yarn is handled and the finished piece washed and ironed.
In its natural form this silk has an oaky brown coloration due to the oak leaves the silk worms feed on. This yarn has then been bleached to a lovely golden shade.
Don't forget that this is PURE SILK at a brilliant price, but don't expect to receive a glossy, shiny yarn – this is definitely of the more “rustic” character. For a luxurious, glossy yarn see our Spun Silk range, which does come at a price, but it really is the quintessential silk.
WHAT'S IT FOR?
Silk is suitable for a wide range of crafts from delicate embroidery to chunky knitting. The more strands that are twisted together the thicker the yarn, so our range includes a variety to suit your project. Knit or crochet the finer weights by hand, standard gauge or chunky knitting machine, or hand work the 16 fold. All weights can be woven in both the warp and weft, knotted into braids and macramé and made into rustic tassels and decorations.
If you want to transform the yarns with a natural look whether for re-enactment or vintage purposes why not dye the silk with hot, cold or natural dyes? The yarn will dye brilliantly with the honey coloured base ensuring that the dyes have a muted, heathery cast, perfect for authentic shades.
Once washed and worn, garments and fabrics soften and drape and by ironing with a low to medium heat direct onto the silk you will create a sheen and develop the lustre. So don’t be put off by the slightly “stringy” look of this silk.
