WHAT IS IT?
A locker hook has a hook at one end and an eye at the other and is used to create a piece of locker hooking which is usually used as a rug or wall-hanging. The hook pulls strips of fabric or yarn through canvas (sometimes hessian) and a yarn is threaded through the loops created to lock all the loops into place.
If you would like complete instructions Diane West has written a booklet that is a great starting point for this fabulous craft (it is also available on our site). It has everything you need know and is fully illustrated with diagrams, tips and techniques from her many years experience of locker hooking.
Locker hooks are available in two sizes to take either fine or chunky rug yarns, fabrics or roving. The size of canvas and holes you are working with, how quickly you want your piece to take and how much detail you require will also influence the hook choice.
WHAT'S IT FOR?You can use your locker hooking for rugs, carpets, hangings, bags and other decorative items and work with yarn, fabric, roving or tops onto canvas or hessian.
It’s a great technique for using up your stash of yarns (whether smooth and plain, fancy and textured) or recycling fabrics by cutting it into narrow strips and hooking (old t-shirts are brilliant!) Create detailed, figurative or abstract designs and if you don’t like what you’ve done it’s easier to pull it out and start again!
The smaller steel hooks are recommended to be used with 5 to 7 holes per inch canvas (or finer) or hessian and medium weight yarns such as DK, Axminster or lighter strips of fabric.
The larger aluminium hooks are recommended to be used with 3 to 5 holes per inch canvas and thick yarns such as chunky berbers, lengths of roving or tops, or strips of fabric.
